and the Apotheosis of Self-Interest — A Warning from an Elder Democracy
by Christopher E. Etter, M.A. Religious Studies, Sacred Heart University
"Even now many antichrists have come." — 1 John 2:18
About This Companion
This interactive companion presents the major comparative frameworks from The American Antichrist and the Apotheosis of Self-Interest: A Warning from an Elder Democracy by Christopher E. Etter. The book diagnoses Christist Nationalism — a replacement for the term “Christian Nationalism” — as the systematic inversion of the Gospel it claims to represent, documented through Augustinian theology, clinical psychology, and cognitive neuroscience.
Navigate the sections below: the Policy Mirror, Matthew 25 Criterion, Three Frameworks, Three Wilderness Refusals, DARVO Inversion Mechanism, the Christism Distinction, and the Three-Legged Stool of democracy.

Sixty statements drawn from six sources: Anton LaVey's Satanic Bible, Ayn Rand's Objectivism, Donald Trump's public statements, Project 2025, Elon Musk's public statements, and Peter Thiel's published essays. They are presented without attribution, grouped by moral theme. Try to identify the source. The difficulty is the argument.
"LaVey acknowledged the structural identity with Rand explicitly: his Satanism was 'just Ayn Rand's philosophy with ceremony and ritual added.' The moral distance between the Satanic Bible and any of the other five sources is smaller than the moral distance between any of them and the Sermon on the Mount." — Christopher E. Etter

The Structural Finding
Six voices. One moral architecture. The Satanist, the philosopher, the politician, the policy institute, the tech oligarch, and the venture capitalist say the same thing in six different registers: self-interest as virtue, contempt for weakness, enemies deserve destruction, compassion is civilization's fatal bug, hierarchy is natural, democracy is exhausted, the strong should rule, and the self is the supreme authority.
Musk's contribution is the most explicit: when he declares that "the fundamental weakness of Western civilization is empathy" he is diagnosing — and condemning — the right hemisphere's foundational moral capacity in the language of software engineering. Empathy is not merely undesirable; it is a defect in civilization's code.
These are not six independent voices. They are a connected network. Thiel is the intellectual architect behind J.D. Vance. Musk was given control of DOGE. Rand's philosophy runs through the Heritage Foundation's intellectual lineage. LaVey drew directly from Rand.

The Diagnosis
Three Independent Frameworks, One Conclusion
Patristic theology, clinical psychology, and cognitive neuroscience arrive independently at the same diagnosis. When three disciplines converge, the probability of accuracy rises sharply.
Framework I — Theology
Augustinian Privation
The Diagnosis
Superbia — egoistic self-inflation that refuses creaturely limitation and places the self at the center of all value. The City of Man organized around love of self to the contempt of God; the City of God around love of God to the contempt of self. The two cities are not variations but inversions.
Convergence Point
Christism is the City of Man wearing the City of God's vocabulary. The organizing principle — love of self, accumulation of power — is the City of Man's. The language — Christian, biblical, chosen — is the City of God's.
Framework II — Psychology
The Dark Triad
The Diagnosis
Narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy — the clinical profile of leaders who capture institutions and turn them against the values those institutions exist to protect. The narcissist cannot acknowledge limits. The Machiavellian treats all relationships as instrumental. The psychopath feels no empathy for those harmed.
Convergence Point
The Dark Triad maps onto the Augustinian description with remarkable precision: the self organized around its own inflation, using every available instrument — including the church — in service of that inflation. The clinical description and the theological description are the same person.
Framework III — Neuroscience
McGilchrist's Hemispheres
The Diagnosis
The left hemisphere attends to the world in a mode of narrow-beam attention, instrumental rationality, and categorical abstraction. The right hemisphere perceives the concrete other person in their wholeness, empathically, relationally. Christism is left-hemispheric religion: the Christian vocabulary without the capacity to perceive the persons that vocabulary is supposed to serve.
Convergence Point
Abstract principle elevated over concrete suffering, categorical exclusion deployed against persons Christ identified with — the instrument of moral cognition that makes genuine solidarity possible is suppressed. The mechanism is neurological, the result theological: abstractionism as the engine of the inversion.
Three independent frameworks — patristic theology, clinical psychology, cognitive neuroscience — converge on a single diagnosis: the systematic inversion of the faith's content under the cover of the faith's name.
The Wilderness Model
The Three Refusals
Christ's three refusals in Matthew 4 name the three virtues any politics claiming Gospel grounding must embody — and the three temptations that define the antichrist pattern when they are accepted instead.
I
Stewardship
Temptation: "Command these stones to become bread."
The offer to use power for private satisfaction. Christ refused to convert his authority into personal provision.
The Inversion
Using public power for private accumulation. The billionaire theology of Rand, Thiel, and Musk: government as instrument of private enrichment, the common good dismissed as theft. DOGE: $2 trillion claimed, $2 billion delivered — the stones turned to bread for those who were already fed.
II
Accountability
Temptation: "Throw yourself down — the angels will catch you."
The claim of exemption from the consequences of power. Christ refused to test whether divine protection made him immune to ordinary accountability.
The Inversion
Thirty thousand documented false statements and the claim of divine chosenness. The January 6 attempt: exemption from losing. The assertion that a chosen leader cannot be illegitimate, cannot be wrong, cannot be held to the standards that govern everyone else.
III
Fidelity
Temptation: "All these kingdoms I will give you, if you fall down and worship me."
The seizure of dominion through the betrayal of foundational obligation. Christ refused the kingdoms at the price of allegiance to what they required of him.
The Inversion
The CPAC-Hungary-Russia pipeline. The ideological alignment with Putinist authoritarianism. The Voting Rights Act dismantled. The seizure of institutional power at the price of the foundational obligations — to the Constitution, to the vulnerable, to truth — that give power its legitimacy.
The Mechanism
The Inversion: DARVO Across Every Domain
Deny, Attack, Reverse Victim and Offender. One mechanism — documented in clinical psychology, confirmed in experimental research — runs underneath every domain of cruelty examined in this book. The abuser, the theocrat, the oligarch, and the misogynist are running the same play.
D
Deny
The harm is denied — minimized, characterized as exaggeration, or simply not acknowledged as having occurred.
A
Attack
The credibility, motives, or character of the person naming the harm is attacked. The subject switches from what was done to who is complaining.
R
Reverse
The perpetrator becomes the victim. The victim becomes the aggressor. Figure and ground are completely inverted.
V·O
Victim/Offender
The reversal is justified by an inverted appeal to liberty — the freedom of the powerful to harm is recast as freedom itself.
The pattern across every domain
The Terminology
Christian vs. Christist: The Distinction That Matters
Christism is to Christianity as Islamism is to Islam: a political ideology deploying the religion's language as an instrument of power, distinct from the faith itself. The -ist suffix marks the difference between sincere practice and instrumental deployment.
The Democratic Foundation
The Three-Legged Stool
Liberty, equality, and fraternity are the three structural supports of democratic life. Remove any single leg and the structure collapses. This book documents a movement systematically attacking all three simultaneously.
The Interfaith Extension
The Shared Garden
The Garden of Eden is not a Christian image. It is the shared inheritance of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam — present in the Torah all three trace to Abraham, retold in the Qur'an, and elaborated for two millennia in Jewish commentary. Beneath the traditions' differing doctrines lies one shared structure: the free creature, the genuine choice, the real possibility of refusal.
"A shared democracy is not the lowest common denominator among the faiths. It is the highest common ground: the political condition each tradition's own scripture identifies as God's original intention for humanity. The garden, kept."

Judaism
Torah · Genesis 2–3 · Deuteronomy 30
The Text
"I have set before thee life and death, the blessing and the curse: therefore choose life." (Deut 30:19) — God states alternatives, declares a preference, and leaves the choosing genuinely free.
The Reading
The yetzer hara (evil inclination) and yetzer hatov (good inclination) — two inclinations whose coexistence is not a trap but the very condition of moral freedom. No doctrine of inherited guilt. The starting point is dignity: tzelem Elohim, the divine image in every person.
✝
Christianity
Genesis 2–3 · Augustinian tradition
The Text
God places the human being in the garden with a single command that can be obeyed or broken. The serpent is permitted entry. The possibility of the wrong choice is the design, not a flaw in it.
The Reading
Augustine: the City of God organized around love of God; the City of Man around love of self. The Fall as the origin of a doctrine of inherited need for grace — but freedom remains the precondition of any love that means anything.
☪
Islam
Qur'an 2:30–39 · 7:11–25
The Text
"O Adam, dwell thou and thy wife in the Garden, and eat ye freely thereof where ye will; but come not nigh this tree." (Qur'an 2:35) — Adam created as khalifah, steward and vicegerent of creation.
The Reading
Adam's lapse is met immediately by repentance and God's forgiveness (2:37) — no inherited guilt at all. The governing themes: stewardship, free will, and mercy. The human being free, responsible, entrusted with the world.
Theocracy: Paving the Garden
Democracy: The Garden Kept
The theocrat of every tradition makes the identical mistake. He sees that people, left free, will sometimes choose wrongly — and concludes the remedy is to abolish the freedom by force of law, making the wrong choice impossible. He paves the garden to prevent the Fall. But a garden in which no wrong choice is possible is not a protected Eden. It is a cage with scripture painted on the bars. The submission he compels is not submission. The faith he mandates is not faith.
A democratic order in which each tradition and each person freely chooses how to live — none compelling the others, each free to live and commend their faith by persuasion rather than force — is not the secular abandonment of religious truth. It is the political preservation of the very freedom every tradition says God gave. Freedom in every tradition is freedom for something: stewardship, the care of creation, the building of a common life that protects the vulnerable.
Contemporary Demonstrations
The Garden Kept Is Not Theoretical
Indonesia · Pancasila
The world's largest Muslim-majority nation did not found itself as an Islamic state. 1945: five principles — belief in God, just humanity, national unity, democratic deliberation, social justice — chosen by Muslim leaders among others. Indonesian scholars locate this pluralism within Islam itself, reaching back to the Charter of Medina. Nahdlatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah, representing tens of millions, remain advocates of democratic pluralism.
The Charter of Medina
7th century: the Prophet Muhammad established a political compact recognizing the Jewish tribes of Medina as a community alongside the Muslims, within a single mutual-defense polity. A foundational precedent — invoked by contemporary Muslim advocates of pluralism — for a religiously plural political community governed by mutual agreement rather than imposition.
Document on Human Fraternity
February 4, 2019: Pope Francis and Grand Imam Ahmad al-Tayyeb of Al-Azhar signed together — the first such document jointly signed by the head of the Catholic Church and a foremost authority in Sunni Islam. It grounds human community in "freedom, that God has given to all human beings, creating them free." The UN made the date the International Day of Human Fraternity.
The real division is not between the religions. It runs through each of them — between those who would keep the garden, preserving the freedom God gave, and those who would pave it, abolishing that freedom in the name of the God who gave it. A pluralist Muslim and a pluralist Christian are allies. The theocrats of rival faiths, however bitterly they oppose each other, are making the identical mistake.
